Learn how to easily make this heart crinkle tag blanket, the perfect DIY sensory toy for babies, with our quick tutorial.
I made 20 of these crinkle tag blankets for the babies in our baby group when I hosted a baby sweethearts party for my moms group. I used the fabric I had laying around and was able to quickly whip up these party “valentines” for our sweethearts.
We received a few crinkle tag blankets as sensory toys for both babies. They can be made in different shapes and sizes like a basic rectangle, circle or even a dinosaur shape. Feel free to get creative using these basic steps.
HOW TO MAKE A HEART CRINKLE TAG BLANKET
Making a heart crinkle tag blanket is a super simple sewing project to make using scrap fabric. Babies love to crinkle the blanket, and play with the tags. It’s a win win project.
To make the heart crinkle tag blanket you’re going to need to gather the following materials. If you’re a sewer, you most likely have these items already laying around. If not, click the links to find what you need quickly online.

DIY CRINKLE HEART TAG BLANKET STEP BY STEP
Start by cutting out a half shaped template on cardstock or cardboard. You can access ours in the downloadable PDF file below. Then use the template to trace the heart shape onto the folded flannel, minky and the crinkle fabric.
Make sure to cut 1/2′ away from the line to leave from for a seam allowance.
Cut the ribbons 5 inches along each. You will need approx. 18-19.
This part is important! How you layer your tags, flannel, minky and crinkle will determine the look of the final product.
Line up the fabric hearts so that the “good” sides are together.
Now fold the good sides of the ribbon together and tuck between the heart layers. Make sure both the ends are sticking out slightly and pin in place.
Place a ribbon every inch, starting an inch away from the point of the heart.
Now place the crinkle fabric on top of the “ugly side” of the flannel fabric.
Your sandwich of layers will be…
Crinkle, flannel, ribbons, minky.
Sew along the lines you traced originally, leaving a gap at the bottom to pull the inside of the heart through.
Then cut off any excess fabric around the edges, especially in the “lobes” and point of the heart for a smoother edge.
Once you’ve flipped the heart right side out, you should now have a cute little heart shaped crinkle blanket. Check to make sure all your tags are out, and the fabric is the right way, crinkle on the inside!
Now you are ready to sew a top stitch around the outer edge of the tag blanket. Tuck in the ends of the opening and backstitch. For an added touch, you could set your sewing machine to a blanket stitch for an added sweet detail. (Not shown below)
Add some jute or yarn and add a sweet little gift tag. I went ahead and cut out heart shapes and stamped with Valentine stamps for my Valentine tag blankets.
